Gouvia Corfu is built on a natural bay, formerly fishing village and they got their name from the many goby or as they are called Gouvia kokovioi fish caught in the region. In 1537, the settlement was unsuccessfully besieged by the Turkish fleet, headed by Barmarosa. Two centuries later, after a similar attempt, the Venetians fortified the port and built a naval base there. The ruins of the Venetian shipyards built in the 18th century located next to the beach. From the formerly impressive structure where the Venetians repaired their fleet of ships, still remain some arches.
