Corfu is one of the northernmost islands of the Ionian Sea. Located at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, near the coast of Epirus. The northeastern coast quite close (approx. 2 km) of the coast of Sarande, Albania. Its shape is oblong, wider in northern and narrows to the south. Its coasts have a total length of 217 km, forming many bays and capes. The terrain is mostly mountainous, especially in the north. Foreigners call peaks (in English Corfu), the two peaks that appear as they approach the visitor to the island. Higher peaks is the Almighty (the ancient tissue 914 m.) And Stravoskiadi (849 m.).
Gouvia Corfu is built on a natural bay, formerly fishing village and they got their name from the many goby or as they are called Gouvia kokovioi fish caught in the region. In 1537, the settlement was unsuccessfully besieged by the Turkish fleet, headed by Barmarosa. Two centuries later, after a similar attempt, the Venetians fortified the port and built a naval base there. The ruins of the Venetian shipyards built in the 18th century located next to the beach. From the formerly impressive structure where the Venetians repaired their fleet of ships, still remain some arches.
