Experience everything this beautiful area has to offer including a forest lake, the scent of Wild Rosemary, a natural spring by a steep rock, and flowering meadows which are home to many species of birds – all under breathtaking open skies. This region was home to farmer Saarijärven Paavo, a much-loved character in a poem by prominent Finnish writer J.L. Runeberg.
The holiday cabins and cottages, each with its own courtyard, offer great opportunities either for recreation or for finding some peace and quiet and recharging your batteries.
Lamminkangas is situated in Saarijärvi, in the north of Central Finland.
Discover the unique atmosphere of our cottages and cabins, some of which are over a hundred years old. Some buildings were constructed more recently, but all of them have been built in a traditional and eco-conscious style. Lamminkangas and the surrounding area are peaceful, and the buildings are decorated in a comfortable, homely way. Every cottage and cabin has its own tranquil courtyard.
Wide vistas, pastures and wild rosemary bushes surround this sweet log cabin which is traditionally clay insulated and lime washed. You can still feel the old time charm of living as one with nature in this cabin containing:
A small porch.
An open plan kitchen/dining/attic area. It has two beds. Two mattresses are placed on the floor of a compact mezzanine in the same room. There is no running water and drinking water is provided by the caretaker. However, there are modern practical features such as a sink and gas stove with two hobs and a gas heater.
A hall with cupboards, a solar refrigerator and a socket for charging the mobile phone or tablet. An inside dry WC is entered from the hall.
A spacious room with a large atelier window and a bed for two when pulled out. In summer nights you can wake up to see the sun rising over the lake. There are stairs leading to a larger mezzanine with two beds. The room is warmed up with a gas heater.
A glass veranda.
A smoke sauna by the lake, which some Finns consider as the only real sauna. After having the soft smoke sauna and a swim in the lake you really feel different! There is an extra sitting room with sofas in the sauna building. This can be used as a dressing room when you take a sauna. A regular wood burning sauna is also available by request.
An outdoor WC near the sauna.
The cabin grounds include a barbecue area and a swing. There is also a small cave outside for additional food storage.
Cabin amenities: Sink, gas stove with two hobs, a fridge, a small cave for food storage, gas heaters, outdoor barbecue, inside dry WC, outdoor WC. Pets are allowed, but smoking is not.
Lamminkangas is surrounded by the beautiful open countryside of Central Finland with its forests, lakes and hills. There is a wide range of greenery in this locality, as well as many tree and bird species. Hares, deer, elk, badgers, lynx and even bears live in the area. Vast panoramas can be admired from the top of the Lamminkangas hills in the hours of daylight (in June and July this continues almost throughout the night). In the hours of darkness the stars and milky way can be seen very clearly.
The nature loving spirit of Lamminkangas is indicated by, for example, organic farming techniques and ecological building materials such as wood, linen, turf, sawdust and clay. Lamminkangas has an environmentally friendly electricity contract and is a member of ECEAT Finland (European Centre for Ecological and Agricultural Tourism) .
Recycling is utilized in local construction work. Complete log cabins have been moved to new locations and converted to new uses. Antique interiors, furniture and household items have been favoured. This has been done to protect the environment and also for the comfort of everyone staying in Lamminkangas.
A walk around Lamminkangas (about 1 km) is a superb way to get acquainted with the surroundings.
The croft at Lamminkangas was established in 1900, when Aakku (later of Lamminkangas) requested a crofter’s plot and was given one on the property of Havumäki, in his home village, Kalmari. Kalmari is situated on the border of four old parishes – Saarijärvi, Kannonkoski, Karstula and Pylkönmäki.
There is a Finnish poem, 'Letter to Aakku', which tells the story of Lamminkangas during and after Aakku’s time. The poem was written by Heikki Mikkonen, but unfortunately it has not been translated into English.
There are several indicators in the terrain of Lamminkangas which show that before Aakku's time, slash-and-burn agriculture was practiced. An old flat-bottomed rowing boat made of a single tree has been found in the mud of Havulampi, the lake on whose border Lamminkangas lies.
