Where to Find the Best Museums in Charleston
"Part of the city's "Museum Mile" and founded in 1773, this is the oldest museum in the United States. The permanent exhibits include collections dedicated to the Low Country's history, from pre-historic times to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to the present day. Along with artifacts like George Washington's christening cup, highlights include an interactive children's exhibit and the Bunting Natural History Gallery; here you'll find skeletons and animal remains, like the cast of jaws from a Megalodon, a now extinct 40-foot-long shark that once lived off the Carolina coast."

"The palmetto tree adorns South Carolina’s state flag, and once upon a time, its wood defended the fledgling city of Charleston (in colonial times known as Charles Town) from would-be intruders. At Fort Moultrie National Historic Park, visitors can see a model of the original palmetto log and sand fort that was only half-built when, in 1776, Commodore Sir Peter Parker, captaining a fleet of nine ships, attempted to take the city by sea. “The British viewed Charleston as a gateway to the South,” says Dawn H. Davis, the public affairs officer of Fort Moultrie and a thirty-year veteran of the National Park Service."

"Fort Moultrie is located on Sullivan’s Island, and is the site of battles from the Revolutionary War, and from the Civil War. The first fort (Fort Sullivan) was constructed of palmetto logs and sand, and was not yet complete when it was attacked by the British Navy in 1776. The Fort was later named in honor of it’s commander during that battle, Colonel William Moultrie, and the fort inspired the flag, and the nickname for South Carolina as the “Palmetto State”."
