"A rush of indie glamour greets you at the door: marble, grandma curtains, banquettes as soft as Italian bomber jackets, rock ’n’ roll. The menu pays homage to the Italian sensibility: great ingredients, simply prepared, pastas to wood-charred breads heaped with deliciousness. But everything is channeled through the imagination of owner/chef Joshua McFadden, a national vegetable star (and one of our 2017 Chefs of the Year), with his own cache of ingredients, produce intuition, and flavor combinations."

The Best Italian Restaurants in Portland Right Now
"If you're looking for a romantic spot to take your honey as your eyes lovingly meet over a plate of fresh pasta, this is it. The beautiful Gothic interior is complete with caged chandeliers, gilded mirrors that look like something out of Versailles, and plenty of romantic candlelight to set the mood. Outside of achieving perfect mood lighting, chef/owner and Rome native Simone Savaiano manages to hit the nail on the head with elegant, sophisticated Italian fare that instantly transports you to Italy."

"Hawthorne’s no-frills pizza cafe stills emerges as one of the town's best pies. Brian Spangler shows respect for his dough, refusing to overload his crisp, quick-fired crusts with more toppings than they can handle. Thankfully, there's no need for DIY concoctions given the pizzeria's meticulous equation of sauce, fresh mozzarella, pecorino romano, and, in the case of the Pizza Amore, salty capicola scattered on top."

Reader Survey 2017: Best Italian Restaurant in Portland
"A wildly popular authentic Italian restaurant, you might expect Nostrana to be a generic house of pasta, but while you’ll always find three or four on the menu, the focus is more on Northern Italian cuisine and pizza. I go here for the house charcuterie, the radicchio salad, the halibut and the seasonal thin crunchy Italian pizza – for me, the simple ones are the best choices. Nostrana is not cheap – by the time you have antipasti, salad, and pasta or pizza you are looking at $50 or more per person, but judging by the crowds most people think it’s worth it."

Against the backdrop of immensely high ceilings in a former grocery store amidst gentle chatter is the vision of Italy of six-time James Beard Award finalist chef Cathy Whims. Whims’ faithful renditions of aged steaks, pizzas, and pasta are so good that they’re able to transport anyone to a land far, far away, where you're suddenly riding in a gondola while stuffing your face full of profiteroles..."

Where to Eat and Drink In Portland, Oregon: A Local's Guide
"In 2014, Elizabeth Nathan ignored all the signs of a dying trend and jumped feet-first into opening a fro-yo shop. A passionate home baker who studied in the pastry program at the Bellouet Conseil in Paris and trained with Martine Lambert, the doyenne of French ice cream, Nathan banked on her belief that "a better frozen yogurt experience was possible." She was spot on. Eb & Bean isn’t like all the rest—so much so it was almost a completely different beast, which is why it’s managed to not only hang on, but thrive."
