Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge was originally a small town, established in 1880. Originally, the town was known as Steedman, named for S.D. Steedman, a county judge and it housed a post office, cotton gin, school, church, railroad depot, and businesses. In 1909, it was renamed Hagerman in honor of James P. Hagerman, a railroad attorney.
